Our Story
Built Around the Complexity of Cross-Border Trade
Gambir Legal was founded with a straightforward purpose: to provide Singapore-based legal counsel that addresses the specific pressures facing businesses engaged in international commerce. From the earliest conversations with potential clients, it was clear that the demand was not for generalist legal support, but for practitioners who understood trade mechanics — INCOTERMS, payment security, sanctions lists, arbitral institutions — as well as the law.
Our name references Gambir — a plant traded extensively through Singapore for centuries as part of the region's early commercial networks. The choice reflects our orientation toward trade as a living, historically rooted practice, not merely a transactional category.
Today, the practice concentrates on three areas: cross-border contract work, trade compliance and sanctions advisory, and legal support for international dispute proceedings. These are not peripheral offerings — they are the entirety of what we do, which allows us to develop depth rather than breadth.

How We Work
Quality & Professional Standards
The standards we apply across every matter, regardless of size or complexity.
Conflict Checking
Every new matter is reviewed against our client register before any work commences, to identify and address potential conflicts of interest at the outset.
Client Confidentiality
All client information is treated as confidential and handled in accordance with Singapore's Legal Profession Act obligations and our own internal data management protocols.
Written Engagement Terms
We provide written engagement letters before any substantive work begins, setting out scope, fee basis, and key responsibilities so expectations are aligned from the start.
Jurisdictional Research Protocol
Cross-border matters routinely require verification of applicable law in multiple jurisdictions. We apply a structured approach to that research and document sources clearly in our advice.
Law Society Membership
Our legal practitioners hold current practising certificates issued by the Singapore Law Society and comply with its professional conduct rules and continuing education requirements.
Clear Communication
We write our advice in plain language wherever possible. Legal precision is maintained, but we avoid jargon that serves no purpose for a client who needs to act on what we say.
Trade Law Expertise for the Asia-Pacific Region
Singapore occupies a distinctive position in global trade networks — as a major transhipment hub, a preferred seat for international arbitration, and a jurisdiction whose commercial law commands wide international respect. Gambir Legal is organised around this reality. Our practice engages with cross-border sale and purchase agreements, distribution and agency structures, INCOTERMS selection, letters of credit, performance bonds, and the regulatory dimensions of trade involving controlled or sensitive goods categories.
The compliance dimension of our work reflects the growing complexity facing trading businesses. Singapore's Strategic Goods (Control) Act creates obligations that many businesses encounter for the first time when dealing with electronics components, chemical products, or dual-use technology. International sanctions regimes add another layer. Our advisory work is designed to translate these regulatory frameworks into practical compliance procedures that businesses can actually implement and maintain.
On the dispute side, we work within the SIAC and SIMC frameworks, which are well-suited to international trade matters involving parties from different legal systems. The New York Convention's broad adoption means that an arbitral award obtained through SIAC proceedings can be enforced in well over a hundred jurisdictions — a significant advantage when a counterparty's assets are located overseas. Gambir Legal brings working familiarity with these processes and with the commercial disputes — payment failures, rejection of goods, short delivery, force majeure claims — that most commonly arise from international trade.
